I was lucky enough to spend the bank holiday weekend in the amazing Isles Of Scilly! It was a work trip, I must add! The purpose of my trip was to research and observe the World Pilot Gig Racing Championships for an art project and I'm pleased to say I achieved this and came away with much more! Oodles of inspiration, everywhere!
I've certainly learnt lots about the world of gig rowing. This sport has so much spirit and I love the fact that people of all ages and all walks of life take part. I loved the energy, the banter, the passion and all of the vibrant colour. Here are just some of the many pictures I took during my attempt to capture the great spirit of this event.
Despite the usual rivalry between many of the teams and the fierce determation to win, it was a joy to see them all helping each other bring their gigs in at the end of each race. There is a lot of pride in this sport as well as tradition and it was especially great to see so many other countries being represented here!
One of my highlights was the 'Oars Up' moment which marks the end of the racing. Every team takes part in this and it really is an incredible sight.
I did take a little time over the weekend to visit somewhere that's been on my list for some time - Tresco. Beautiful Tresco. It's hard to actually believe you are still in the UK as it is just so tropical and the gardens really are out of this world. It is so serene and just fills your senses with every turn you take. Here are some of my highlights. I've no doubt 'Tresco' will be an addition to my SouthWest collection very soon, along with a gig racing piece!
I loved that mediterranean garden! In fact, I felt like I was the only one on the island at one point!
Finally to complete the weekend, I joined in the end of of race celebrations with the lively racing crew from RM Tamar! They made me very welcome and they certainly know how to party! The whole of St Mary's was filled with celebrations, parties, music and fizz!!
All in all, a super weekend celebrating a fabulous sport and enjoying a very special place.
