Jazzing up the art today!
I'm embellishing a huge cityscape today. This is a piece of textile art for my Theatre Royal exhibition in Plymouth later this year. I'll be posting sneaky peeks along the way but the big reveal will be the 8th December.
As you can probably guess this piece is of the famous city that never sleeps! New York! 42nd Street to be precise, New York's theatre land. Colour, glitz and glamour are the main ingredients of this flamboyant piece. Each piece for this exhibition is going to be movie poster size - so big!
Embellishing with all the jazzy trimmings is the really fun bit! I manage to acquire some interesting finds from various sources including curtain makers, upholsterers, even furniture makers! Up cycling is always satisfying and adds so much depth and interest. If I'm really lucky I can acquire paraphernalia from the actual place I'm portraying.
Work on this scale has to be done in stages and todays stage is embellishing the buildings. I don't have to worry about colour scheming in this one - New York is a rainbow of colour and anything really goes. It's not very often I get to be so loose when it comes to colour so I'm fully unleashing the rainbow with this!
I'm working around the clock for this exhibition but loving every minute. Work such as this is quite addictive and my sketch book is with me everywhere I go right now. When a flash of inspiration comes, it needs recording!
'Show Time' opens on the 8th December and runs until 25th January. Theatre Royal Plymouth, Royal Parade, Plymouth. www.theatreroyal.com
